Hedge Fund Rising Stars: Howard Shainker

Working at Daniel Loeb’s hedge fund, Howard Shainker implemented Third Point’s successful trades shorting subprime mortgages in 2007 and 2008, and then its equally successful long bets on mortgages over the next two years. Shainker left Third Point to co-found hedge fund manager Bow Street last year with his friend Akiva Katz, as the pair had been planning since their days at Harvard Business School. In a sign of the high expectations for the New York–based fund, which will combine in-depth research with event-driven investing, Bow Street is one of an elite group of funds to receive capital from Blackstone Alternative Asset Management’s new hedge-fund-seeding fund. A graduate of Wesleyan University, where he majored in economics and history, Shainker, 35, serves on the board of Accountability Counsel, a California-based nonprofit that defends environmental and human rights around the world.
