Hedge Fund Rising Stars: Andrew Tsai

Andrew Tsai
Chalkstream Capital Group

Andrew Tsai founded Chalkstream Capital Group with Peter Muller in 2003, originally to run Muller’s money. But the firm quickly became a multifamily office catering to ultra-high-net-worth individuals, particularly those in the financial services and hedge fund industries. CIO Tsai is up to their demands, possessing a BS in economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a background in analytics — as well as an entrepreneurial bent. He worked as a fixed-income trader for Lehman Brothers in both London and New York, and in 1997 co-founded quantitative hedge fund firm Integrity Capital Management. In 1999, Tsai left finance to become president of Urbanfetch, a start-up that promised customers delivery within the hour of whatever was ordered online — from a candy bar to a DVD. In 2003, when he was the CEO of a company backed by private equity outfit Carlyle Group, he and Muller decided to launch Chalkstream. In 2004 their new firm opened to outside capital. At Chalkstream, Tsai, 40, combines hedge fund investing with private equity, real estate and other proprietary illiquid investments.
