Hedge Fund Rising Stars: Tony Waskiewicz

Tony Waskiewicz
Mercy Health

In early 2010, after Sisters of Mercy Health System — recently renamed Mercy Health — decided it needed a full-time CIO to oversee its $2 billion endowment, it hired Anthony Waskiewicz. He had an extensive background in asset management and had worked as an investment consultant. The position required a move to St. Louis from Washington, where Waskiewicz, now 45, had been based as CIO of a large multifamily office. But he and his family have found they enjoy living in the Midwestern city, and Waskiewicz’s tenure as CIO of Mercy Health’s endowment is proving successful, particularly when it comes to the hedge fund portfolio. The endowment’s board has been so pleased with Waskiewicz’s performance in providing risk-adjusted returns with low correlation to traditional investments that it recently approved a $100 million increase in the hedge fund allocation, to $450 million.
