Gustavo Gattass & team BTG Pactual

The buy side says: “In a difficult year to make money, Gustavo has been a steady voice you can trust.”

At No. 1 for a second straight year — and for the fourth time in five years — is the quartet captained by Rio de Janeiro–based Gustavo Gattass, 36. The BTG Pactual squad, which follows 16 stocks, launched coverage of Colombia’s Pacific Rubiales Energy Corp. in June 2011 with a valuation-based buy on the Toronto-listed shares, at C$26.45, dubbing it one of the more liquid stocks in a burgeoning region. In October, when the shares slipped to C$24.19, the analysts pounded the table, citing improved clarity about the petroleum producer’s oil reserves. Shares rose to C$30.46 in March before falling back to C$23.35 by the middle of July, but the team stands by the call. Gattass “thinks long term, which is consistent with our philosophy,” explains one buy-side advocate. — Ben Mattlin
