Weekend Reading

If you’re like me, you’ll be watching track & field events all weekend. For everyone else, here’s some news and two interesting papers for your weekend reading. Enjoy!

Here are today’s top stories:

- The Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan is not alone in seeing lots of PE opportunities right now in Europe.

- The Alaska Permanent Fund had a flat year, though it did beat its market benchmark by half a percent or so (...if you care about that sort of thing; which I kinda don’t...).

- The Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec is a profit seeking investor... except when local companies are being courted by foreigners.

- Here’s a nice article on pension fund governance over on P&I.

- Big props to this group of investors for taking on ‘The Man’.

And if you’re looking for something longer to read, here are two good papers from the Rotman International Journal for Pension Management:

  • Ranji Nagaswami has a paper entitled, “The Road Ahead: Rethinking the Investment Policy Roadmap”. It’s an interesting read, as it details the reform agenda (that was recently killed) for NYC’s pension funds. While these policies may never make it in NY, they can still help other public funds.
  • Alex van der Velden and Otto van Buul have a case study entitled, “Really Investing for the Long-Term: A Case Study”. The authors detail PGGM’s Responsible Equity Portfolio, which is an equity portfolio that attempts to integrate a broader (and longer-term) set of risks into the investment decision-making. See the graphic below for details.

Have a nice weekend!
