Arifumi Yoshida Citi

Arifumi Yoshida takes second place for a third year running. Singled out for his “global perspective, comparing even small Japanese manufacturers not just to one another but also to their international competitors,” as one grateful client puts it, the Citi analyst also earns points for upgrading Calsonic Kansei Corp. from hold to buy in May 2011, at ¥357. Yoshida made the case that the Saitama-based manufacturer of automobile climate-control systems and other components would likely benefit from Nissan Motor Co.’s rapid recovery following the devastating earthquake two months earlier. (Nissan owns a controlling stake in Calsonic.) The shares had zoomed 31.4 percent, to ¥469, by the end of February. “He provides value-added information on a broad universe of stocks,” explains another supporter. — Ben Mattlin
