The 2014 Tech 50: Louis Eccleston

Lou Eccleston
President
S&P Capital IQ

As president of S&P Capital IQ and chairman of S&P Dow Jones Indices — which together contributed $1.7 billion to parent McGraw Hill Financial’s $4.9 billion in 2013 revenue — Lou Eccleston occupies a quiet corner office high above the streets of Lower Manhattan. A few floors below him, there are no conventional offices: One corner is a pool lounge (billiards, that is), and silences may be pierced by the sound of a Ping-Pong match not far away. This is the S&P Capital IQ Innovation Lab, which Eccleston, 57, believes will reinvent the financial information services enterprise and its culture. The goal is to be a “tech-enabled information company” so as not to “cede [innovation] to start-ups and pay up for it later,” says the former Bloomberg and Thomson Financial executive, who has headed Capital IQ since 2010. The unit went so far as to create its own code, IQLanguage, “to unlock the power of our data with differentiated analytics.”
