Joining Indiana University Health has been an education for Ryan McNally. As an investment manager for the health care system’s $1.9 billion in capital since 2012, McNally, 39, has responsibility for the alternative-investment portfolio. He’s enjoyed the opportunity to explore new strategies and approaches. For Chicago native McNally, who has a BS in accounting from Kirksville, Missouri’s Truman State University, asset allocation beats the lonelier world of trading. After taking his first job with options- and futures-trading firm Chicago Research and Trading Group, he joined Chicago-based market maker Peak6 Investments in 1998. McNally left Peak6 in 2005 and spent some time skiing in Deer Valley, Utah, before co-founding a Chicago broker-dealer focused on volatility arbitrage. He then did a stint as a proprietary trader and worked in the treasury department for Englewood, Colorado–based Western Union Co. At IU Health, McNally has been actively investing the fund’s 40 percent hedge fund and 8 percent private markets allocations.
