Deutsche Clings to Top of Year-to-Date Research Tally

Deutsche Bank Headquarters And News Conference As Bank Posts 4Q Loss

Deutsche Bank AG, Europe's biggest bank by assets, posted a fourth-quarter loss that exceeded estimates after the company eliminated more than 1,400 jobs and set aside 1 billion euros ($1.35 billion) for legal expenses. Deutsche Bank's overall lead narrows considerably but the firm still far outpaces the competition when it comes to the best analysts.

When the results of the 2013 All-Japan Research Team survey are added to the previously published All-Europe and All-Europe Fixed-Income rankings, Deutsche Bank, with 61 positions, holds the pole position on Institutional Investor’s 2013 Top Global Research Firms: Year-to-Date roster — but not by much. Bank of America Merrill Lynch climbs past J.P. Morgan to secure second place and trails the German firm by only three positions. Down to third is J.P. Morgan, with 50 spots, followed by UBS, with 48. Morgan Stanley rounds out the top five, with 45 positions.

Although Deutsche Bank’s overall lead narrows considerably — it had been up by eight — the firm still far outpaces the competition when it comes to analysts and teams considered the best in their respective sectors. Deutsche claims 21 first-place finishes across the three rankings, nearly double the 12 won by UBS, its closest competitor when firms are measured by this metric. Barclays, in sixth place overall, takes third in total number of top-ranked researchers, with ten.

This table will be updated on May 14, with the release of the 2013 All-Asia Research Team results.

The 2013 Top Global Research Firms: Year to Date 1 When the results of the All-Japan Research Team survey are added to the previously published All-Europe and All-Europe Fixed-Income rankings, Deutsche Bank retains the top spot in the year-to-date tally — but not by much. Bank of America Merrill Lynch climbs past J.P. Morgan to capture second place and trails the German firm by just three positions.
