Leading the lineup for a third year running is the BTG Pactual threesome under Rio de Janeiro–based Gustavo Gattass, 37. “I find Gus’s daily updates very helpful,” notes one buy-side backer. “He puts what might otherwise be generic news flow into context with everything that is happening in the region.” The team’s top pick is Pacific Rubiales Energy Corp., which is headquartered in Canada and has extensive oil and gas exploration and production facilities in Colombia and Peru. The analysts like the outfit’s “low valuation, potential for significant short- and medium-term growth from its reserves, and a reserve and acreage pool that offers the highest potential for long-term growth in our coverage universe,” says Gattass. That portfolio currently numbers 14 but will be expanded by at least three names by year-end, he adds. Elsewhere in the sector, Brazil-based chemicals companies will likely continue to outperform their peers in other countries, thanks to tax cuts and a weakening real, the researchers believe. — Leslie Kramer |
