In second place for a second year running is the UBS crew co-captained by Stéphane Déo and newcomer Paul Donovan. The six economists, who work out of offices in Frankfurt, London and Zurich, excel at presenting “complicated economic issues with an interesting, witty angle,” in the words of one Scandinavian investment manager. The team is “not very optimistic for the forthcoming year,” Déo says, and believes the euro zone crisis will continue unabated. Even so, the economists see little chance of the economic union dissolving. “We never believed in the breakup of the euro. We always said it’s a very low probability, if not zero,” he notes. “And now the potential for Europe to deliver a big systemic shock has decreased quite a lot.” — Carolyn Koo |
