Soohyung Kim
Standard General

As the titans of the hedge fund industry enter their eighth or ninth decades, the search is on to identify the next generation of top talent. Soohyung Kim and New York–based Standard General could be among that group. CIO and managing partner Kim, 38, co-founded Standard General in 2007. The New York City native, who has a BA from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University, started his career as an analyst on the proprietary trading desk at Bankers Trust Co. in 1997 before joining New York–based hedge fund firm Och-Ziff Capital Management Group two years later. There he helped launched Och-Ziff’s fixed-income business. In 2005 he co-founded a New York–based credit hedge fund, Cyrus Capital Partners. His latest firm, Standard General, manages more than $600 million and specializes in event-driven investments opportunities across the capital structure. In 2010 the firm was part of a group that won control of Young Broadcasting, a New York–based media company, and brought it out of Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Last year Standard General took majority control of Young.
