Tractebel Energia is a Florianópolis, Brazil-based utility that builds and operates power plants and sells electricity. The company is one of Brazil’s largest private electricity generators, operating nine hydroelectric power plants, five thermoelectric plants and 13 others, ranging from biomass to wind to solar. Founded in 1899 as Gerasul — Centrais Geradoras do Sul do Brasil — the company now employs more than 1,100 people. In 1998 Gerasul was sold to Tractebel by Eletrosul, and the company changed its name to Tractebel Energia in 2002. ENGIE Energy Latin America Participações is a majority owner.
