Menno Sanderse assumed leadership of Morgan Stanley’s European metals and mining research in 2012. He joined the firm in 2002, after working for six years as an equity analyst at Merrill Lynch, and debuted on the All-Europe Research Team two years later as co-leader of the No. 3 group on the Transport lineup. By the time he switched coverage to this sector, his crew had earned four first-place finishes, including a three-year run at the top beginning in 2010. This year the 41-year-old analyst, who holds a bachelor’s degree in financial economics from the Netherlands’ Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, leads his three-strong squad from runner-up to third place, marking the firm’s best showing on this roster since 2001. Working out of London, they follow 20 regional stocks, but Sanderse expects to extend the reach of their coverage universe. Among their current favorites is Boliden, a Swedish miner and smelter of copper and zinc. In November 2013 prices for copper treatment and refining were rising, prompting the analysts to upgrade the stock from equal weight to overweight. Sure enough, by the end of last month, Boliden’s shares had leaped 46.6 percent, to Sf129.80, outperforming their peers by 60.1 percentage points. “I appreciate Menno’s broad view and simultaneous attention to detail,” says one fund manager.
