In the seven years before he became CEO of United Rentals on the eve of the financial crisis, Michael Kneeland has grown the former rollup into what he calls a real company by focusing on customer service and continually improving efficiency. The Stanford, Connecticut–based enterprise is now the world’s largest provider of industrial equipment, with more the 400,000 pieces of machinery and tools spread across nearly 900 locations in the U.S. and Canada.
