The pension plan of US military personnel is a step closer to becoming a defined contribution plan. Air Force Lt. Col. Ellen Krenke, a Pentagon spokeswoman, said the Defense Advisory Council on Military Compensation, has recommended moving to such a plan to the Quadrennial Review of Military Compensation. The Defense Advisory Council studied making such a transition and now the QRMC will decide whether to move forward. Krenke declined to say why the military is considering moving to such a plan in the first place.

The Defense Advisory Council's recommendations could then be reviewed by each military service or by the Secretary of Defense. Krenke said this could happen in no particular order. "The QRMC could decide to take a shotgun approach and send out recommendations straight to the Secretary of Defense or to another budget committee," Krenke said. She said there is no timeframe when the recommendations could move to the various service branches. The DoD's plan would cover military personnel only, not civilian employees of the Department.
