Activist hedge fund manager William Ackman frequently makes money by investing in brand-name companies that are ripe for a change.

William Ackman is no stranger to controversy. The founder of New York–based activist hedge fund Pershing Square Capital Management has made a living scuffling with companies. Last year Ackman persuaded the management of restaurant company Wendy’s International to spin off Tim Hortons, its profitable Canadian coffee and doughnut shop chain, to shareholders.
