In March the Gabelli Asset Management senior vice president launched his race to succeed Carl McCall as New York state comptroller next year. As sole trustee of the $120 billion New York State Common Retirement Fund, the comptroller holds one of the most powerful public finance positions in the world. Mulrow, who estimates that he'll need $5 million to finance his campaign, boasts a who's who of supporters, including Mario Gabelli, hospital workers' union honcho Dennis Rivera, DLJ founder Richard Jenrette and former congressman Tony Coehlo. Mulrow has long straddled the realms of politics and finance. He's a veteran of Rothschild and DLJ and a onetime consultant to former New York governor Mario Cuomo; he's also worked for the New York State budget office. "I feel as though every step I've taken in my career has made me perfectly suited for the job of state comptroller," he says, ever the candidate.
