The former Soviet republic of Ukraine has raised $785 million for the construction of a steel arch to prevent further radiation leaks from the nuclear reactor at Chernobyl, The Guardian reports. Twenty-eight governments from around the world have offered money for the construction. The European Commission has pledged $143 million, while the U.S. has offered $123 million. Britain has contributed $50 million and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has pledged $172 million. Japan, Italy and Canada have not yet contributed.
