The Obama administration is said to be proposing an overhaul of the U.S. mortgage market that calls for the elimination of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, as well as for a smaller role by the federal government. Sources said the White House is expected to release Friday a white paper that contains three options to reorganize the market without the government-sponsored enterprises, each of which observers say would raise costs for borrowers.
