SECOND TEAM Jay Gelb  Barclays Capital

Slipping to second place after one year atop the roster, Jay Gelb of Barclays Capital impresses investors with his insights into both life and nonlife carriers. “Not many analysts can help me compare the two subsectors,” explains one grateful buy-sider. Clients continue to profit from Gelb’s coverage of Arch Capital Group; he upgraded the stock from equal weight to overweight in September 2008 and has reiterated the call repeatedly since. Shares of the Hamilton, Bermuda–based diversified insurer and reinsurer jumped 26.6 percent, from a split-adjusted $26.60 to $33.68, in the 12 months through August, outstripping the Standard & Poor’s 500 multiline insurance index by 31.5 percentage points.
