Goldman Sachs has shifted $144 million of its distressed debt to a category usually occupied by assets with prices that are not observable. The transfer to Level 3 from Level 2 in the first quarter was more than 10 times the average amount it had moved in both the first and fourth quarters of last year. Observers said that despite the shift, Goldman marked up the assets anyway, but has not responded to media requests to explain why.
