Repeating in third place, UBS’s team of David Halldén, 41, and one colleague monitor nine European paper and packaging companies. The Stockholm-based researchers, one portfolio manager observes, “take the long view, which fits our investment style, and don’t switch views based on short-term noise.” For example, a long-standing buy on British papermaker DS Smith, largely on price and volume growth, has stood the pair in investors’ good stead over the past year. For the 12 months through mid-January, the stock posted a gain of 17.1 percent, rising to 362.82p, and led European shares overall by 23 percentage points. Another name that Halldén and his colleague have persistently encouraged investors to buy is Austria’s Mayr-Melnhof Karton. The cardboard-carton manufacturer is a favorite for the year ahead thanks to its profit growth, high capacity utilization and productivity gains. Its shares climbed 17.6 percent during the year through mid-January, to €105.60, and UBS’s squad projects a further rise to €115.
