Repeating in second place are Shawn Kim and his ten-strong Morgan Stanley squad in Seoul. “Their calls have been spot-on, and their research is a must-read,” proclaims one portfolio manager. The group remains bullish on Vieworks Co., an Anyang-based manufacturer of radiography and other medical equipment and systems. In June, anticipating that a transition from analog to digital X-ray technology would spur demand, Kim and his colleagues reiterated their overweight rating on the stock. It had outperformed South Korea’s broad market over the preceding 12 months — rising 7.4 percent, to 30,329 won — and by late last month had rocketed to 51,500 won, returning 69.8 percent during a period in which its domestic peers slipped 3.3 percent. Another favorite among the more than 100 names the analysts follow is CJ Korea Express Corp. The Seoul-based transport and logistics services provider is poised to benefit from the rising popularity of e-commerce, they contend, and the shares are significantly undervalued. At 189,500 won in late April, they could advance to 260,000 won by year’s end, the team projects. This year Kim, 47, marks his debut appearance on the Technology/Semiconductors lineup, leading Morgan Stanley to its second consecutive No. 2 showing on there.
