Jeneration Capital Management, an asset manager based in Hong Kong, has hired a former partner at hedge fund Tiger Global Management as its chief investment officer.

Jason Tan is now responsible for Jeneration's investment strategy and portfolio, according to a statement by the firm late on Monday. He left New York-based Tiger Global, which focuses on technology and consumer-focused investments, in October 2017, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Jeneration was founded in 2015 and now has about $2 billion of assets under management. The multi-strategy investment firm has a flexible mandate to invest in public and private markets, but its main strategy is direct investments involving negotiated deals with companies. Many of the deals are in venture capital, with Jeneration focused on providing growth- and expansion-stage financing to technology companies in the Asia Pacific region.

“We are building something different at Jeneration Capital,” Tan said in the statement. “We are applying our experience with top-tier investment firms and our deep relationships with local entrepreneurs to bring a fresh perspective on how an investment should work.”

Some recent investments include Asian ride-hailing company Grab, streaming video service Bilibili, and Uxin, an online platform for used car sales, according to a spokesperson for Jeneration.

The spokesperson said that many of the firm’s investors are Asian entrepreneurs who can advise the companies held by Jeneration. In the statement, the firm described its strategy as “collaborative capital,” or combining “patient, long-term” funding with this strategic advice.
