Industries: Paper & Packaging – Second

Myles Allsop, Mathias Carlson & team, UBS

From 2007 through 2011 solo analyst Myles Allsop ruled the roost on behalf of UBS. Through much of last year, the London-based analyst shared oversight of an expanded team with Paris-based Mathias Carlson, who left the firm in November — but not before helping Allsop guide the group to a second-place showing. The UBS crew garners praise for upgrading Mondi from neutral to buy in December 2010, at 479.76p, on higher corrugated-packaging prices. In July, after the stock had shot up 34.6 percent, to 645.93p, the analysts downgraded it to neutral, on valuation. Shares of the South Africa– and U.K.-based packaging company fell 29.6 percent, to 455p, through December. “UBS is extremely competent and knowledgeable — and some of their trading calls have been exceptional,” cheers one buy-side backer.
