Barclays’s Jay Gelb, who drops one notch to third place, recently added life insurers to his coverage universe, which consists of 35 stocks. In August 2011 he upgraded Chubb Corp. from equal weight to overweight, at $54.13, on its strong balance sheet and aggressive share-buyback program. Through August 2012 shares of the Warren, New Jersey–based property/casualty company surged 36.5 percent, to $73.89, and outpaced the Standard & Poor’s sector benchmark by 13.1 percentage points. Chubb remains among Gelb’s favorite stocks. “Great data, great corporate access and good stock picking — who could ask for more?” remarks one devotee.
