Advancing from runner-up to the third team is Takuya Osaka of Morgan Stanley MUFG Securities Co. Hailed for his “good coverage of interesting, overlooked transportation stocks that are outside the mainstream,” as one client puts it, Osaka initiated reporting on Tokyo’s Skymark Airlines in October 2010 with a valuation-based buy rating, at ¥677. Last August, when the low-cost passenger and freight carrier’s stock shot past his target of ¥1,300, Osaka reiterated his recommendation and held firm even as the shares started to slide. They had fallen to ¥727 by the end of February, for a life-of-call advance of 7.4 percent that beat the sector by 8.8 percentage points. Osaka tracks 18 stocks, three more than last year, and has no plans to broaden that universe. — Ben Mattlin
