Barclays
London–based Barclays was founded in 1896 with the merger of 20 banks and today employs 40,000 people and serves more than 48 million customers worldwide. The banking group went public in 1902, became listed in New York in 1986 and later was listed in Tokyo. Barclays introduced and funded many new products, including the world’s first industrial steam railway, in 1819; the U.K.’s first credit card — the Barclay Card — in 1966; and the first debit card twenty years later.
