For a second consecutive year, UBS researcher Angeline Sedita captures third place. She forecasts that the challenges U.S. oil services and equipment companies are facing will persist, as domestic oil production is likely to remain robust even as Saudi Arabi, Iraq and eventually Iran add further supply. Simultaneously, she notes, growth in global demand “remains relatively mild, with China still weak.” Once oil prices do begin to recover, however, U.S. land markets “will be among the first to experience increased activity, given globally low oil break-even costs,” the analyst contends, so she prefers exposure to domestic land activity rather than international or global offshore production. Sedita favors oil field services giant Halliburton Co. of Houston because more than half its earnings are generated from the North American market. Moreover, she says, the company stands to benefit from its agreement to acquire crosstown rival Baker Hughes. Halliburton’s stock was trading at $37.38 in mid-September, and she advises that a price of $60 is justified. The three largest U.S. land drillers are also among the researcher’s favorites: Tulsa, Oklahoma’s Helmerich & Payne; Houston-based Patterson-UTI Energy; and Nabors Industries of Bermuda. Sedita ”is not afraid to make bold calls and has a high level of conviction,” attests one fund manager fan.
