In third place on this new list, Houston-based Douglas Mavrinac has tracked U.S. shipping equities for Jefferies since joining the firm in May 2003. He previously spent more than a decade in the energy industry, including stints as a commodities analyst in the strategic market analysis group at Houston-based electric utility Dynegy and as a financial researcher in the exploration and production group of Anglo-Dutch supermajor Royal Dutch Shell. The 44-year-old earned a bachelor’s degree in finance at Louisiana State University followed by an MBA at New Orleans’ Tulane University. Stationed in Houston, Mavrinac reports on 27 names in this space. In July 2014 he became more upbeat on the prospects for Bermuda-based crude tanker operator DHT Holdings, hiking his rating from hold to buy on potential benefits from increased OPEC oil production. Through the middle of last month, the New York Stock Exchange–quoted shares advanced 26.6 percent, to $7.86, against the 1 percent decline in the U.S. broad market. The researcher also favors DHT rival Gener8 Maritime, a New York–based oil and petroleum products transporter that he added to his sector portfolio in July with a buy rating, partly on its large fleet. Although the stock had tumbled 15.1 percent by mid-September, to $12.07, Mavrinac foresees a rise to $20. “Doug knows the industry inside and out,” one portfolio manager declares.
