The sharp selloff of tech stocks, especially shares of companies that recently went public, has all but shut down the IPO market for now. But it hasn’t cooled interest in private companies.

So far this year, several firms known primarily for their hedge funds have been aggressively plunking down capital for private businesses at a furious pace, in some cases at a quicker rate than they did last year.
