Broker-dealer BTIG is one of the few boutique banks and prime brokers that has truly been able to take advantage of the new hedge fund market environment. A big part of BTIG’s success is a result of Peter ­Tarrant’s hard work. As head of business development and capital introduction at New York–based BTIG, Tarrant has worked alongside Justin Press and Brian Petitt, co-heads of prime brokerage, and Steven Starker, co-founder of BTIG and head of the firm’s global equity business, to build BTIG’s hedge fund client base and capabilities. During the dot-com boom, Tarrant, 39, was working in corporate services at Montgomery Securities in San Francisco. He was also running that firm’s stock buyback desk, where he began interacting with Scott Kovalick, co-head of BTIG. In 2002 Kovalick convinced Tarrant to go over and help market the outsourced trading business BTIG offers to hedge funds and other clients.
