Katherine Chan, 28, started her career with a front-row seat for the financial crisis. In 2007, a year before graduating with a degree in linguistics and mind, brain and behavior from Harvard University, Chan took an internship with Credit Suisse Group’s global energy division; she was back there working full time in the summer of 2008, just in time to watch the market hit all-time highs and then begin to come crashing down. The experience hooked her, and she soon found an opportunity at New York–based HG Vora Capital Management, a $25 million start-up that has since grown into a $1.5 billion leisure- and gaming-focused firm. There, she built the foundation for her buy-side expertise, which she now uses as a partner and senior analyst at Anandar Capital Management, a New York–headquartered, event-driven firm with more than $300 million in assets. In 2012 Chan became the first analyst hired by the Anandar team when they were still at their parent firm, Evanston, Illinois–based Magnetar Capital; she helped develop the spin-off, which became official last August. The Queens, New York, native shows the same pioneering spirit outside the office as the NextGen Committee co-chair of 100 Women in Hedge Funds, which was formed in 2001 to encourage women in the alternative-investment industry to better leverage their professional relationships. In her NextGen role, Chan works on fostering young women in the industry and making sure they get the exposure and mentorship they need to compete.
