Methodology

The Global Research Leaders ranking lists sell-side research providers by the combined total number of positions each earns across Institutional Investor’s research team surveys: the All-America Research Team; the All-America Fixed-Income Research Team; the All-Asia Research Team; the All-Brazil Research Team; the All-China Research Team; the All-Europe Research Team; the All-Europe Fixed-Income Research Team; the All-Japan Research Team; the Emerging Europe, Middle East & Africa Research Team; and the Latin America Research Team.

The Leaders: Equities ranks firms based on their total number of positions captured in equity sectors. The Leaders: Fixed Income lists them according to the spots they claim on the All-America and All-Europe Fixed-Income research teams, as well as the relevant debt sectors in the All-Asia, All-Brazil, Emerging EMEA and Latin America teams.

Results of each survey are published separately throughout the year, beginning in February with the All-Europe Research Team and concluding in November with the All-China Research Team. Rankings for each poll are determined strictly by using numerical scores. We take the number of votes awarded to each analyst or team and weight it in relation to the size of the institution responding and the place it awarded (first, second, third or fourth). Individuals and teams are designated runners-up when their scores fall within 35 percent of the third-teamers’ scores. Please see the methodology associated with each survey for additional information.

The names of those surveyed are kept confidential to ensure their continuing cooperation. Voters must meet eligibility requirements, and winners must achieve a minimum vote count. All ballots are subject to review by our Research Operations Group, and final results may be inspected by an independent auditor.
