Ranking Overview Methodology

JPMorgan Chase & Co. has taken an early lead in the race to become 2020’s Top Global Research Firm.

The bank has so far accumulated 34 team positions across Institutional Investor’s research team surveys — the most of any research provider. It’s a strong start for JPMorgan, which finished last year as the No. 2 research provider globally.

But with five regional surveys and the Global Fixed-Income Research Team ranking still to come, this race is still wide open.

Current tallies are based on each company’s combined results in the All-Japan Research Team and Latin America Research Team. The final results, to be announced at the end of this year, will also include team positions from the following rankings: the All-America Research Team; the All-Asia Research Team; the All-China Research Team; the All-Europe Research Team; the Emerging Europe, Middle East & Africa Research Team; and the Global Fixed-Income Research Team.

The Global Research Leaders ranking lists sell-side research providers by the combined total number of positions earned across Institutional Investor’s research team surveys: the All-America Research Team; the All-Asia Research Team; the All-China Research Team; the All-Europe Research Team; the All-Japan Research Team; the Emerging Europe, Middle East & Africa Research Team; the Latin America Research Team; and the Global Fixed-Income Research Team.

Results of each survey are published separately throughout the year, beginning in March with the All-Japan Research Team and concluding in December with the Global Fixed-Income Research Team. Rankings for each poll are determined strictly by using numerical scores. We take the number of votes awarded to each firm in a sector and weight it in relation to the size of the institution responding and rating it awarded. Firms are designated runners-up when their scores fall within 35 percent of the third-place scores. Please see the methodology associated with each survey for additional information.

The names of those surveyed are kept confidential to ensure their continuing cooperation. Voters must meet eligibility requirements, and winners must achieve a minimum vote count.
