THIRD TEAM Matthew Heimermann J.P. Morgan

Unranked last year, Matthew Heimermann of J.P. Morgan shoots straight in to third place. Praised for his “unmatched understanding of the history of complex situations,” in the words of one portfolio manager, Heimermann garners plaudits for staying with a January 2006 overweight rating on Ace as an undervalued, diversified carrier that had built up a broad customer base and maintained sustainable operating returns. In the 12 months through August, shares of the Zurich-based property/casualty insurer jumped 23.4 percent, from $52.32 to $64.58, and led the Standard & Poor’s 500 multiline insurance index by 28.3 percentage points.
