Rising the final rung to finish on top for the first time is the BTG Pactual duo led by João Carlos dos Santos in São Paulo. Providing “deep investigations in an often overlooked sector,” according to one buy-side enthusiast, the analysts keep tabs on seven stocks and have plans to increase that total. In October they launched coverage on Brazil’s Qualicorp with a buy, at 14.00 reais, citing the benefit administrator’s expansion into administrative- and clinical-cost management. Qualicorp’s shares advanced a healthy 17.1 percent, to 16.40 reais, through mid-July. Santos, 32, covered the sector for Bank of America Merrill Lynch before moving to BTG Pactual in 2010. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Escola Politécnica da Universidade de São Paulo. — Ben Mattlin
